Choquequirao Ruins hike Travel plan, Peru
Listed as the next "Machu Picchu," the Choquequirao Ruins, also known as the "Cradle of Gold," captivate an increasing amount of attention each year. Situated in a remote and challenging-to-reach location, this Inca time capsule stands out and remains largely untouched by hordes of tourists.
The Inca ruins are preserved as they were meant to be—difficult to access, perched high in the mountains, exuding tranquility and serenity. The site is surrounded by slowly hovering birds, silent wind gusts, and snowy peaks, creating an almost perfectly carved amphitheater around the ancient city. Choquequirao stands as a testament to the beauty of Inca architecture, offering a peaceful and awe-inspiring experience for those willing to venture into its remote and pristine location.
In the near future, Peruvian officials are considering the construction of a funicular to make reaching Choquequirao more accessible. One can only imagine the impact this development will have on the tranquility and majesty of this pristine location. Currently, the only way to reach Choquequirao is through a challenging hike—two days in, two days out. In this itinerary, I've condensed the journey into a three-day trek for those with sufficient fitness levels. However, if the challenge seems too demanding, it's advised to opt for the four-day hiking plan.
This guide not only outlines the trekking itinerary but also provides essential information on reaching the starting point, packing recommendations, accommodation options, and suggested camping sites along the route. Whether you choose the condensed or traditional plan, this guide ensures a comprehensive and enjoyable experience as you embark on the journey to discover the hidden wonders of Choquequirao.
